The Photography Of John McColgan

‘Howth Horizons’ From Tuesday 31st March’15 until 20th April’15

All Proceeds From This Exhibition Goes Directly To Howth RNLI

Stopping to see the place we live in, with a fresh eye, can be a revealing experience.

So many things about our environment can go unnoticed, unappreciated.

How often do we look out our front window at 6am free from the constraints of our daily routine?  John McColgan's images capture scenes of Howth which break routines. They provide an opportunity to pause and think about the beauty that surrounds us. They give insights into moments rarely observed and much less frequently contemplated upon and captured on camera. Unsociable hours, beautiful light, prefect moments, new insights, new horizons. John's collection of work captures a serenity and peace we often strive for in our daily lives. A truly beautiful take on Howth. Peter Gordan

At the age of 14, I bought my first camera in Woolworths for ten shillings and sixpence. I was a telegram boy in the GPO at the time and that amounted to half of my weekly wage!

I have been taking pictures ever since of family, friends, birthdays, Christmas and special occasions.

And now under the patient mentoring of award-winning landscape photographer, Peter Gordon, I have begun a journey to the next level.  I have fallen in love with photography as an art form and its infinite creative possibilities. This is my first exhibition and in it I set out to capture the beauty and diversity of Howth and its ever-changing horizons.  All of these images were shot in natural light over a period of six months.   Capturing the transient, ephemeral beauty of light on landscape and finding that precise moment to press the shutter is challenging, satisfying and rewarding. I have learned to see with new eyes.
